The Antiochian Schools’ Symposium in its Second Day

The fifth international theological symposium in Balamand continued in its second day with a decent attendance and strong discussions that added to the conference its aimed flavor. The second day started with a special presentation by Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo concerning the common methods of exegesis between St. John Chrysostom and Isaac the Syrian. His eminence clarified that the method of these two fathers is based on the existence of three levels of interpretation:

the Physical level, the logical one and the spiritual level. The reader of the scripture has to try to move from a level to another until reaching the highest one, which is the spiritual level. The lecturers continued their speeches on St. John Chrysostom when Fr. Michel Najm presented the exegetical qualities of Chrysostom based on his interpretation of the Gospel of John. Fr. Michel’s presentation attracted the participators through its language and content.

In the second session, Professor Merja Merras of Finland had her conference in which she spoke about the rhetoric and poetic ways of exegesis in the Antiochian school. Before going to lunch break, Fr. Ayyoub Chehwan presented the influences of Antiochian fathers on the Antiochian liturgical heritage calling these fathers “creative liturgical writers” because they worked on a pastoral liturgy that is close to the faithful.

After lunch, Father Naamtallah Khoury gave a lecture about the exegesis method of Theodore of Mopsuestia based on his interpretation to the Gospel of John. He showed how Theodore edited scriptural verbs and expression in order to overcome the biblical contradictions that he faced. As for Bishop John Qawaq, the representative of the Syriac Orthodox Church, he gave an overview of the school of Edessa before moving on to explaining the exegetical method of one of this school’s fathers, St. Ephraim the Syrian.

In the last session, the lecture was for the professor of Old Testament in St. John of Damascus institute of theology, Professor Nicolas Abou Mrad who clarified the exegetical ways of some Antiochian fathers through their interpretation of Genesis 1 & 2.

The conference continues and ends its sessions on Friday February 24th.
