Speech of His Beatitude John X At the Golden Jubilee for the Launching of the St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology at Balamand

Speech of His Beatitude John X
At the Golden Jubilee for the Launching of the St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology at Balamand, Damascus, October 25, 2020

Dearly beloved,
In the fall of 1970, the Institute of Theology at Balamand was inaugurated to stamp the journey of the church of Antioch with what she already had and continue it, at the end of two millennia, into the third millennium.
“It is difficult”, as the hymnographer puts it, to cover the journey of this Establishment that the Church of Antioch sought as a place to grow the plants of the word and its ministers.
It is difficult to cover the journey of Antioch who wished, through this Establishment, to give birth to its ministers under the Antiochian wing and through it to connect them to the theological institutions of the world.
It is difficult to describe the endless efforts of our good ancestors of blessed memory who laid the foundations of this work and finally set it up as an Institute of Theology, settled upon the Balamandian hill as a resting place. It has the Virgin our Lady as a Champion Leader and finds in John of Damascus a warm intercessor full of earthly and divine wisdom.
On the fiftieth anniversary, it is my pleasure as well as my obligation to recall, in short, the story of the days that led us where we stand. It is not surprising that monasteries were first and foremost places to sow and grow thoughts throughout all ages and oases for contemplating Divine knowledge and the Good News or the Gospel of Christ. Balamand Monastery was most famous among the monasteries of the Church of Antioch. The story began with Athanasius Kasir, the Archimandrite of Damascus, who had been commissioned by Patriarch Methodius of Antioch, in 1832, to establish the Clerical School in Balamand. This School lasted until 1840. The flame of Antioch in Balamand was not extinguished but kindled anew at the beginning of the twentieth century with the opening of the Clerical School after Meletius Doumani had been elected Patriarch of Antioch in 1899. The School regained radiance through renowned teachers such as Ghattas Qandalaft, Gerges Hammam, Georgi Attiyeh, and many others who excelled in all ecclesiastical and scientific fields. The School provided studies in theology as well as in other main scientific fields. It graduated in the twentieth century most of the prominent figures of the Church of Antioch.
After interruptions due to the first and second World Wars, the third phase came about under Patriarch Theodosius VI in the 1960s, when Bishop Ignatius Hazim was appointed to take charge and develop both the monastery and the School. It goes without saying, at this particular stage, that Archbishop Anthony Bashir, the Metropolitan of New York and North America, originally from Douma, played a pioneering role in enabling his Mother Church to establish a school for higher theological education. On August 15, 1966, by the efforts of Patriarch Theodosius VI and the participation of the Holy Synod fathers, the journey was crowned by laying the cornerstone of the Institute at Balamand, with the participation and presence of Metropolitan Philip Saliba of North America, who undertook to complete the mission of his predecessor.
In the autumn of 1970, the dream found its way into realization. Regardless of whether the historical Antiochian school of theology was a theoretical teaching method or a palpable edifice, the newly established Institute in Balamand was considered the successor to that School and its embodiment, after a long period of interruption. The day of November 7, 1971, marked the official inauguration of the Institute, which was attended by governmental officials headed by Lebanese President Suleiman Franjieh. The everlasting words of Patriarch Elias IV Muawad, came as a summary of the spirit of the Church of Antioch as he said:
“Antioch is so great in the history of the new calling; Antioch, who was the first to utter the word “Christians” and swayed it on the lips of all generations. It is the Antioch of the mind and heart that lifted its invocations to the unfolding revelations of the Mystery, and unveiled its depth through words that equally express it in parable and real-life... Antioch engendered Paul the Apostle, Peter, Ignatius, Theophilus, Chrysostom, Ephrem, Romanos, and John the Damascene... Antioch is the voice that went out to all the earth announcing the Truth of the Divine Incarnation... Antioch has a neglected history; it invites us to remove the burdens accumulated by time in forgetfulness and to blow away the layers of ashes that cover the sparks of her soul."
Today, as we remember those times and this last fifty-year journey, we cannot overlook the good works of the people who have directed this Institute to this day as deans. We remember with much gratitude Archbishop Ignatius Hazim, later Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, as the first director of this Institute. We also mention the Thrice Blessed, Archimandrite Pandeleimon Rhodopoulos of the Greek Church, later Metropolitan of Tiroloi and Serention, a professor of Canon Law who worked hard to consolidate the academic foundations of the newly established Institute. We also mention the munificence of the Church of Greece who ensured the continuity of the Institute when the Lebanese war began, in 1976. The Institute moved its administrators, professors, and students to Greece to continue their studies. We also mention Deacon Michel Kyriakos, who is now Metropolitan Ephrem of Tripoli and Koura. His Eminence was assigned as the Institute’s Director. We recall the good works of Father Michel Najim, the Institute’s Dean from 1980 to the mid-1980s. We proudly mention the late Metropolitan Constantine Papastefanou of Baghdad and Kuwait, Bishop George Abou Zakhem, who is now the Metropolitan of Homs. We particularly remember Archimandrite Paul Yazigi, who became the Metropolitan of Aleppo and Alexandretta. The cruel days of his kidnapping and the negligence and silence of the international community have robbed us of the joy of his presence among us. We mention Dr. George Nahhas, as well as Bishop Ghattas Hazim, who is now the Metropolitan of Baghdad and Kuwait, and Father Porphyrios Georgi. We pray God to bestow his strength on the current Dean, Rev. Archimandrite Jack Khalil. With this flash-back, we inscribe in our hearts and offer to the Lamb who was slain for the salvation of the world the names of all the precious figures recorded by this Institute since its inception. We remember every employee and every worker to this day, trusting that their hard labor is written in the Book of Life, and is seen by the eyes of the Holy Lord.
This Institute bears witness to the authentic faith of the Church of Antioch; it also testifies and seals with certainty that piety and theological research are the essential basics. Hence, its constant emphasis on the academic and spiritual life of each applicant. This duality of spirituality and academics does not live in dichotomy but is rather entrenched, intertwined, and cohesive. From this derives the actual and living experience in this Institute, expressing the incarnational theology of the Church of Antioch. If the academic life is associated with the soul, the living experience of the student is associated with the body. A human being is not only a soul or a body but rather an entity of both. Perhaps this experience and what it represents constitutes one of the rarest theological and educational experiences that continue to our days, while most of the colleges and institutes of theology tend to favor theoretical sciences over living experience.
Perhaps the oriental and existential experience of the Church of Antioch is what has always qualified her to engage in its mission in the Orient, which was never limited to theology, but extends to all disciplines. Therefore, this Institute became the heart of the University of Balamand, established in 1988. Hence, this Institute remains, first and foremost, an insight into the reality of the Antiochian Orthodox Church and a window on all the other theological and educational institutions. It remains a place of in-depth formation for priests and ministers with insights on the reality and prospects of the Church’s pastoral ministry. This Institute will always be an oasis where theological thought interacts with the realities of life. It remains, as I would like it, a unique institution for teaching Christian theology and thought in the Arabic language. It continues its role as a live platform where the student learns about other religions, especially Islam, not from mere books and references, but rather from a lived and tangible reality and by direct and close contact with the other. This Institute persists as a living testament to the authenticity of this Christian presence in the East. It also continues to be a vivid crucible in which all the potential of Antioch from various dioceses and countries fuse into one testimony of Jesus Christ at the heart of this historic East, imparting this witness to the whole world.
Nulli Secundus is a Latin adage and motto meaning "Second to None". We keep it in mind, always remembering that the Church of Antioch was historically pioneer, not in prideful boasting thrones, but by service and evangelization, to instill the sweetness of Christ Jesus in the hearts of all. So far, we strive with all our might and enroll all our ecclesiastical, educational, missionary, and cultural institutions to take the lead in ministry and testify for an open Christian authenticity that edifies the nation and the society by breeding good human beings. "Second to None." We say it, as we look at the legacy of the Church of Antioch and the pride of its great history, having endowed the world with the name "Christians". Saying this, we recall that Antioch is also the church of martyrs and righteous saints, the church of monasteries and temples where fragrant prayers constantly arise. Thus, we bury all arrogance and boasting, looking first and foremost at the love of the Lord of Glory, hanging upon His life-giving Cross.
This can best be described in our Arabic literature, which is dear to our identity and originality, in the following words of the poet:
“We are people who never accept the average position.
We either lead the world or lie in the grave.”
This Institute remains the pride of its graduates, the beacon of guidance, and their heart’s nostalgic place, regardless of the distance. The words of the late Professor Georgi Attiyeh reverberate in them: “Thou shall remain the precious heart’s ambition.”
The Institute stands under the protection and succor of the Holy Virgin and Her Holy Monastery. It is garbed with the legacy of the Church of Antioch and her noble history. It remains in the vicinity of that famous dome which embraces the sky and overlooks the blue legend of the sea. Ever oriental, it tells the story of its neighboring eternal Cedar tree, worshipping its Creator. It is a pearl of great price, lying in the vicinity of the pine trees. Perhaps the best words that can describe this captivating place, the fragrance of its history, and the abounding aroma of its love for the generations to come are found in the sentimental poetry of Boulos Al-Khoury of Thrice Blessed Memory, the late Bishop of Tyre and Sidon as he says:
“A region of many unique characters
A mountain and a plain next to the waters
The white dome is a lofty helmet
And the hill extends to the harbor
What an eastern Arab imagery
Drawn by the generous hands of the Creator
O my people, if the storms of cruelty
Blow upon us and the country
You cannot harm our lofty heights,
For we are fashioned from the clay of these heights.”
I wish you many years.

Preferimos morir a no tener calidad.”

«Nous sommes un peuple jamais satisfait du moyen niveau ;
