The Fifth International Symposium in Balamand

With the blessing of his Beatitude, Patriarch Ignatius IV of Antioch and his Eminence bishop Ghattas Hazim, the fifth international symposium in St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology was opened under the title “Exegesis and Theology in the Antiochian Schools of Antioch, Edessa and Nisibis”.

After the opening prayer, his eminence bishop Ghattas Hazim started the symposium with a word in which he reminded us about the speech of his beatitude in the opening of the theological institute in 1970 when he said that the institute is a reopening of the Antiochian schools that disappeared for a period of  time in history. After reading his beatitude’s letter addressed to the symposium in which he focused on the importance of the subject, the lecturers started their interventions.

First, Metropolitan Basil of Akkar presented a unique historical presentation about the Antiochian Schools and stressed on the fact that Diodore of Tarsus is not the founder of the Antiochian school which goes back to an older date, to the priest Melchion. He then talked about the schools of Edessa and Nisibis that were unique in their model of combining academics with life experience, this model that is adopted in Balamand today. In the next lecture, Fr. Paul Feghali presented the contributions of St. John Chrysostom and then continued speaking about the transition from Greek to Syriac through translations and writings in Antioch.

Dr. Daniel Ayuch, professor of the New Testament in Balamand, presented an analysis of the hermeneutics of Diodore of Tarsus through the latter’s interpretation of the Book of Psalms. Ayuch believed that Diodore, regardless of his several mistakes, used a specified methodology which is the historical literal way that imprinted Antiochian Exegesis later.
Going back to St. John Chrysostom, and particularly to his most precious work i.e. his interpretation of the Epistle to the Romans, Fr. Demetrius Bathrellos and Archimandrite Jack Khalil spoke about Chrysostom’s view to the principle of justification through faith. Fr. Jack discussed the possible interpretations of the expression “righteousness of God” which is found in several occasions in the mentioned epistle.

In the last part of the first day, Professor Fr. Charbel Joumhouri from the Holy Spirit University in Kaslik discussed the expression of St. Ephraim the Syrian “the hidden God and the revealed God”. He stressed on the fact that the Syrian used the unique poetic genre to defend against the Arian heresy. In the final intervention, Karl Pinggera spoke about the two schools of Antioch and Alexandria and concluded through exegetical examples that the Antiochian literal way is not always the closest to historical facts while the allegoric Alexandrian approach could be, in some occasions, closer to the scientific truth.
