International Academic Collaboration in Balamand between Three Orthodox Theological Faculties

With the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Ignatius IV of Antioch and All the East and in collaboration with the World Council of Churches, the Saint John of Damascus Institute of Theology at the University of Balamand hosted a “Joint Inter-Faculty Course” between the 24th and the 28th of April, 2012. This course wass held between three Orthodox Faculties of Theology: the Faculty of Theology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – Greece, the Faculty of Theology at the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu – Romania, and our Institute at Balamand. The joint course was under the title “Prayer and the Sacrament of the Eucharist: An Ecclesiological and Ecumenical Perspective” and its participants were professors and students of Theology from Lebanon, Greece and Romania, as well as representatives of the World Council of Churches.

The work began with a Doxology at the Church of the Dormition of the Our Lady of Balamand Patriarchal Monastery. The prayer was followed by an address of His Grace Bishop Ghattas Hazim, Abbot of the Monastery and Dean of the Institute of Theology, who welcomed the visitors in the name of His Beatitude the Patriarch. He said: “it is a joy for us that you be with us in our house which is yours; it is also a joy for us to hold this conference about such an important subject at the Monastery of the Lady of Balamand”. He also focused on the “Sacrament of the Eucharist and its understanding which is the heart of the Church and its life, for the Eucharist is Christ and our life in Him”; “therefore”, he added, “we meet to discuss Ecumenical work from several view points, the most important of which is the openness to the other with love and respect, benefitting from all that is positive in the other in order to exchange positive opinions and concepts…”

Then Fr. Daniel Buda the Program Executive of the “Coordination of Church and Ecumenical Relations Program” at the World Council of Churches explained the aim and vision behind this “Joint Course”.

The guests had a tour at the Monastery and the Center of Joseph the Damascene for Manuscripts. They also visited the campus of the University of Balamand where the Vice President, Professor Michel Najjar, together with a group of University officials welcomed them and introduced them to the history of the University of Balamand, its branches, specializations and actual presence.
