INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF HIGHER ORTHODOX SCHOOLS OF THEOLOGYFinland, June, 12 18, 2006 |
During the week of 12-18 June 2006, the 7th Congress of the Higher Orthodox Schools of Theology under the title Orthodox Tradition and the 21st Century took place at the University of Joensuu in Finland. His Eminence, Archbishop Leo of Carelia and All Finland, welcomed the participants in his residence in Kopio, as well as the President of the University of Joensuu and the governors and mayors of the region. The Department of Orthodox Theology at the Faculty of Theology has hosted and coordinated all the sessions. The common line in the conference was an appeal to strengthen the bonds between the different faculties, particularly in the fields of research and student exchange on the levels of graduate students. Professors and Deans from 10 countries have agreed in their conferences and presentations on the necessity of practicing a theology of dialogue based on critical thought within the frames of the Orthodox Tradition. Participants have resolved that a greater emphasis should be made on integrating theology in society. This could be achieved by giving our academic curricula a more practical and pastoral orientation. The St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology was represented by Dr. Daniel Ayuch who read a paper on Dynamic Tradition and Modern Exegesis, and made a presentation of the online Bible course program in Spanish that is given by the Institute at www.pase-cursos.org. All the contributions will be published by the Faculty of Joensuu in the coming months.
