The 7TH Symposium of the
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ORTHODOX DOGMATIC THEOLOGIANS
Paralimni, Cyprus
5-7 March, 2024
TheSeventh International Symposium of the IAODT, entitled “THE HUMAN BEING IN THE IMAGE OF GOD,” was organized in Paralimni, Cyprus on March 5-7, 2024, under the Auspices of His Beatitude Georgios, Archbishop of Cyprus. This academic event was made possible through the gracious hospitality of His Eminence Vasilios Metropolitan of Constantia and Ammochostos, who hosted it at the premises of his Holy Archdiocese. In his Opening Speech, the President of IAODT Fr. Porphyrios Georgi, Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Saint John of Damascus Institute of Theology, University of Balamand, indicated that the relevance of the topic of the present conference highlighting that “our 7th conference acquires an exceptional importance in responding to crucial questions and challenges that human societies face nowadays all over the planet which put into doubt firmly established values and beliefs which have, for so many years, provided our life with clear orientation and solid convictions concerning the meaning of human life, the family and its constituents, gender identity, the human body, interpersonal relationships, pain, happiness, beauty and once again the meaning of human freedom, its parameters and horizons. He also announced the release of the Sixth Volume in the series of the Conference Proceedings: The Eschatological Vision of Orthodox Theology, which was hosted by the Saint John of Damascus of Theology, University of Balamand, on June 2018.
The IAODT gathers professors and specialists in Dogmatic Theology from prestigious Universities and centers of research in Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Lebanon, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Skopje, Switzerland, the U.K., and the USA, with the perspective of having more members joining our group from other countries to represent, as much as the Almighty Lord allows us, Orthodoxy in the entire world”.

On Wednesday, March 6 the Symposium’s participants paid a visit to the Holy Archdiocese of the Church of Cyprus in Nicosia. They were welcomed by His Beatitude Georgios, Archbishop of Cyprus and by the Mayor of the city Mr. Konstantinos Yiorkadjis.
At the end of three days of work, the following statement was issued:
FINAL STATEMENT
During the presentations of the papers, it was emphasized that the human being as a creation of the Triune God, Who is the fullness of Goodness, Life, Love, and Perfection, is an image of the divine Logos. Through relevant treatments of patristic teaching (Athanasius the Great, the Cappadocian Fathers, Cyril of Alexandria, John Chrysostom, Maximus the Confessor, John of Damascus, Symeon the New Theologian, Gregory Palamas, and others) as well as the ascetical tradition (Origen, Evagrius Ponticus, Macarius the Egyptian, and others) aspects of the theological anthropology of the Church were presented which, nevertheless, cannot be understood in isolation from Trinitarian theology, Christology, the Doctrine of Creation, Ecclesiology and Eschatology. In this regard, it was emphasized, among other things, that the unity of human nature provides the perspective from which the sacramental nature of marriage is revealed as the union of man and woman, who together make up one body in Christ, excluding any other form of so-called “marital relationship”.
With the advent of postmodernity and the digital and technological revolutions of recent decades, types of anthropology emerged that risk deconstructing human nature while portraying the human being as a “creation of his/her own will”. These tendencies result in idolatrous worldviews.
Contemporary challenges, as they emerge from modern research in the fields of physics, biology and other relevant sciences, should not threaten the theology of the Church regarding the creational relationship between God and the cosmos, given that they do not touch on the most basic premises of Orthodox anthropology, insofar as creation depends on the Life-Giving Divine Energy of the One Holy Trinity. Of course, dealing with each of these problems causes difficulties for contemporary humanity, and they should be considered by theology, not because they impact the imago Dei but as a contribution to the ecclesial becoming of society and the entire creation. During the discussions, views and contributions of 20th century theologians (St Justin Popovich, Metropolitan John Zizioulas, Metropolitan Kallistos Ware, Fr. Georges Florovsky, Fr. Dumitru Staniloae, Vladimir Lossky, Fr. John Romanides, Fr. André Scrima, and others) served as the ground for fruitful reflection and analysis of issues concerning human nature, relations between the sexes and human communication.
Closing the Symposium, all participants expressed their solidarity with the people of Cyprus who continue to suffer in the face of the occupation of their homeland, and their hope for His Eminence Metropolitan Vasilios of Constantia and Ammochostos to return, by the help of the Almighty, to the see of his predecessor St. Epiphanios of Salamis.

للاتحاد الدولي للاهوتيين العقيديين الأرثوذكس

إنعقد المؤتمر السابع لـلاتحاد الدولي للاهوتيين العقيديين الأرثوذكس تحت عنوان "الإنسان على صورة الله" في باراليمني في قبرص، ما بين 5 و7 آذار 2024، برعاية صاحب الغبطة جورجيوس رئيس أساقفة قبرص، وضيافة صاحب السيادة باسيليوس متروبوليت كونستانتيا وأموخوستوس الجزيل الاحترام. في كلمته الافتتاحية، أشار الأب بورفيريوس جرجي، رئيس الاتحاد الدولي للاهوتيين العقيديين الأرثوذكس، وأستاذ اللاهوت العقيدي في معهد القديس يوحنا الدمشقي في جامعة البلمند، إلى جسامة موضوع المؤتمر الحالي، مؤكّدًا أن "مؤتمرنا السابع يكتسب أهمية استثنائية في الرد على الأسئلة والتحديات الحاسمة التي تواجهها المجتمعات البشرية في الوقت الحاضر في جميع أنحاء العالم، والتي تثير الشك في القيم والمعتقدات الراسخة التي زودت حياتنا، لسنوات عديدة، بتوجه واضح وقناعات ثابتة فيما يتعلق بمعنى الحياة الإنسانية، والأسرة ومكوّناتها، والهوية الجندرية، والجسد البشري، والعلاقات الشخصية، والألم، والفرح، والجمال، والحرية الإنسانية وحدودها وآفاقها". كما أنه أعلن عن صدور المجلد السادس من سلسلة أعمال مؤتمرات الاتحاد بعنوان: "الرؤية الأخروية للاهوت الأرثوذكسي" والذي استضافه معهد القديس يوحنا الدمشقي في جامعة البلمند العام 2018.
هذا ويجمع الاتحاد الدولي للاهوتيين العقيديين الأرثوذكس أساتذة ومختصين باللاهوت العقيدي من جامعات ومراكز بحث مرموقة في بلغاريا وقبرص وفرنسا وألمانيا واليونان ولبنان ورومانيا وروسيا وصربيا وسكوبيا وسويسرا والمملكة المتحدة والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.

أعرب المشاركون عن فرحتهم بانتخاب البروفيسور مارينا كولوفوبولو من جامعة أثينا نائبةً لرئيس الاتحاد، وقاموا بالإجماع بتعيين الأب يوحنا تولكان رئيسًا فخريًّا للاتحاد.
صباح الأربعاء 6 آذار، قام المشاركون في الندوة بزيارة إلى دار رئاسة أساقفة كنيسة قبرص في نيقوسيا. وكان في استقبالهم صاحب الغبطة جورجيوس رئيس أساقفة قبرص والسيّد قسطنطين يوركادجيس محافظ مدينة نيقوسيا.
وقد أصدر المؤتمر في الجلسة الأخيرة من أعماله البيان الختامي الآتي:

تم التشديد خلال تقديم الأوراق البحثية على أن الكائن البشري من حيث هو خليقة الإله الواحد المثلث الأقانيم، الذي هو ملئ الصلاح والحياة والمحبة والكمال، هو صورة الكلمة-اللوغوس الإلهي. وعلى إثر معالجة التعاليم الآبائية (لقديسن أمثال: أثناسيوس اكبير، والآباء الكبادوك، كيرلس الإسكندري، يوحنا الذهبي الفم، ماكسيموس المعترف، يوحنا الدمشقي، سمعان اللاهوتي الديث، غريغوريوس بالاماس، وسواهم) والتقليد النسكي (لدى العلامة أوريجنس، إفاغريوس البنطي، مكاريوس المصري، وسواهم)، تم البحث في الخصائص اللاهوتية للأنثروبولوجيا الكنسية، والتي لا يمكن فهمها بمعزل عن اللاهوت الثالوثي، الخريستولوجيا، عقيدة الخلق، الإكليزيولوجيا والإسخاتولوجية. وعلى هذا الضوء، تم التأكيد، بالإضافة إى أمور أخرى، على أن وحدة الطبيعة البشرية توفر المنظور الذي تنكشف منه طبيعة الزواج السرية كاتحاد بين الرجل والمرأة، اللذين يشكلان معًا جسدًا واحداً في المسيح، مع دحض أي شكل آخر من أشكال ما يُزعم أنه "علاقة زوجية".
مع حلول زمن ما بعد الحداثة وثورة التكنولوجية الرقمية في العقود الأخيرة، برزت أنماط أنثروبولوجية تجازف باتجاه تفكيك الطبيعة البشرية مع تصوير الكائن البشري كـ "خليقة لمشيئته/مشيئتها الخاصة". هذه المقاربات تؤدّي إلى رؤى وثنية للكون.
إن التحديات المعاصرة، كما تنبثق من الأبحاث الحديثة في مجالات الفيزياء والبيولوجيا وسواهما من العلوم ذات الصلة بالموضوع، لا ينبغي أن تهدد لاهوت الكنيسة فيما يختص بعلاقة الخلق بين الله والكون، ولا أن لا تمس أبسط المنطلقات للأنثروبولوجيا الأرثوذكسية، بمقدار ما تعتمد الخليقة على القوة الإلهية المحيية للثالوث القدوس الواحد. بالطبع، فإن التعامل مع كل من هذه المشاكل يسبب صعوبات للإنسانية المعاصرة، ويجب أخذها بعين الاعتبار في اللاهوت، ليس فقط لأنها تؤثر على "صورة الله"، ولكن ضمن إطار المساهمة في الصيرورة الكنسية للمجتمع والخليقة بأكملها. وكانت مناقشات آراء وإسهامات لاهوتيي القرن العشرين (القديس يوستينوس بوبوفيتش، المتروبوليت يوحنا زيزيولاس، المتروبوليت كاليستوس وير، الأب جورج فلوروفسكي، الأب دوميترو ستانيلواي، فلاديمير لوسكي، الأب يوحنا رومانيدس، الأب أندريه سكريما، وآخرين) بمثابة أرضية للتفكّر المثمر والتحليل للقضايا المتعلقة بالطبيعة البشرية والعلاقات بين الجنسين والتواصل البشري.
وفي ختام المؤتمر أعرب جميع المشاركين عن تضامنهم مع شعب قبرص الذي ما يزال يعاني في مواجهة احتلال وطنه، وأملهم في عودة صاحب السيادة متروبوليت كونستانتيا وأموخوستوس باسيليوس، بمعونة الله الكلي القدرة، إلى كرسي سلفه القديس إبيفانيوس السلاميني.
