Everyyear the holy Orthodox Church celebrates the feast of one of her greatestAntiochian saints, Saint John of Damascus. Saint  John  composed severalliturgical canons, defended the faith, and wrote the famous book Exposition of Faith. He was speciallyknown for his defense of icons. Everyyear the Institute of Theology at Balamand celebrates the feast of St John ofDamascus since he is its patron saint. The festal celebrations which were presided by His Beatitude Patriarch IGNATIUS IV  were asfollows:

On December 2, 2010, a colloquium was held in the Patriarchal Monastery of Balamand about thehistory, heritage, icons, manuscripts, architecture and liturgical items in themonastery. A group of specialists spoke about these issues. They speciallydetailed new findings in the archeological digs around the monastery which was established in 1157 AD and is a Patriarchal monastery. On December 3, 2010, Vespers and the service of the breaking of the five loaves were held in Balamand. The next day, the Matins and Divine Liturgy were held in the occasion of the feast. All services were served by the St John of Damascus Institute of Theology Choir, composed of the seminarians. The Divine Liturgy was presided by His Beatitude Patriarch IGNATIUS IV. Serving with His Beatitude were Their Eminences Metropolitan George of Homs and Metropolitan Ephrem of Tripoli and Koura, and His Grace Bishop Ghattas Hazim who is the Abbot of the Balamand Monastery and the Dean of the Institute of Theology.

In the evening, St Romanos the Melodist Choir of the Archdiocese of Beirut held a recital of Byzantine Music, on the theme of the Nativity of Christ.
 

On Sunday evening, The talented Qanun player Imane Homsi also played the Qanun for an hour, using her special technique of ten fingers.

The festivities, attended by many faithful, were filled with much joy and blessings, through the intercessions of St John the Damascene.

عيد  القديس يوحنا الدمشقي في البلمند

تعيّد الكنيسة المقدسة للقديس يوحنا الدمشقي في الرابع من كانون الأول من كل سنة. والقديس يوحنا هو من كبار الآباء الأنطاكيين، وقد عُرف مدافعاً عن العقيدة وخصوصاً عن الأيقونات، ونظم العديد من التسابيح الليتورجية وكتب مقالات لاهوتية باتت مرجعاً إيمانياً. اتخذه معهد اللاهوت في البلمند شفيعاً له، ويقيم في فترة عيده من كلّ سنة احتفالات متنوعة.

تميّزت احتفالات العيد لهذه السنة بحضور صاحب الغبطة البطريرك إغناطيوس الرابع، بطريرك أنطاكية وسائر المشرق، وبالحضور الكثيف للمؤمنين في كافة النشاطات في جو من الفرح والبركة، وقد  توزعت الاحتفالات على الشكل التالي:

في اليوم الأول من الإحتفالات (2 كانون الأول 2010)، نظّم معهد اللاهوت ودير سيدة البلمند بالتعاون مع معهد التاريخ والآثار في جامعة البلمند ندوة ليوم كامل حول موضوع "دير سيدة البلمند علم الآثار، تحاليل معمارية وبحث في التراث المنقول". شارك في الندوة عدد من المتخصصين والباحثين في علم الآثار والفن الكنسي عرضوا دراسات علمية حول فن العمارة في دير البلمند، مخطوطاته، أيقوناته، والأدوات الكنسية فيه. يذكر أن دير البلمند تأسس سنة 1157، وهو دير بطريركي.    

وعشية العيد، أقيمت صلاة غروب وكسر الخمس خبزات، وصباح يوم العيد ترأس القداس الإلهي صاحب الغبطة البطريرك إغناطيوس الرابع ومشاركة أصحاب السيادة:جاورجيوس أبو زخم راعي أبرشية حمص وأفرام كيرياكوس راعي أبرشية طرابلس والكورة، والأسقف غطاس هزيم رئيس دير سيدة البلمند وعميد معهد اللاهوت، إضافة إلى عدد من الكهنة والشمامسة، وحضور رئيس جامعة البلمند الدكتور إيلي سالم وعمداء الجامعة ومدرائها. وقد خدم القداس الإلهي جوقة معهد القديس يوحنا الدمشقي اللاهوتي.

وفي المناسبة أيضاً، أحيت جوقة القديس رومانوس المرنم التابعة لأبرشية بيروت أمسية ترتيل من وحي عيد الميلاد مساء السبت في 4 كانون الأول. وأحيت أيضاًُ "سيدة القانون" العازفة إيمان حمصي حفلة عزف على القانون مساء الأحد 5 كانون الأول، مستخدمة تقنية العزف بالأصابع العشر الحديثة التي برعت فيها وتميّزت.
